A neigh in a boundless blue
Inspired by Western expressionism and effected by cultural and social issues around him, Rafic Charaf was sensitive to both the human struggle and issues within Lebanon. Throughout many phases in his career, he painted subjects such as the folk hero, landscapes and calligraphy. This beautiful piece of Rafic Charaf carries many of the themes he’s known for. “A neigh in a boundless blue” shows a stylized black horse-like figure on a red ground, silhouetted against a vivid turquoise sky. The creature’s mane and tail flow upward in long, flame-like shapes, giving it a sense of movement, spirit, and myth. It appears to be reaching or howling toward a crescent moon, which adds a poetic and almost mystical tone.
