Ibrahim Marzouk

Born in Beirut, Ibrahim Marzouk (1937- 1975) studied at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts from 1954-58. On a scholarship, he attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Hyderabad, India which influenced his practice, brightening his color palette. Later, he received another grant to study at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Finally, he came back to Beirut to work and teach at the Lebanese University. Tragically, he died at the beginning of the civil war when a bomb struck a local bakery. Marzouk’s highly acclaimed work and notoriety led to commemorations by many of his peers including the poet Mahmoud Darwish.
